English-medium elective

This course will examine the major social, cultural, economic, and political developments which occurred during Japan's imperial period (1868-1945) as well as the post-war/de-colonial period which immediately followed its collapse. In addition to exploring the creation of key national institutions including military conscription, tax, and education, it will examine Japan's emergence in East Asia as a colonial empire, as well as the role of figures ranging from the emperor to settlers, refugees, migrant workers, and fugitives.
