Profile

Kristina Tolinsson Ting is the Swedish Programme director and teaches language courses from introductory to advanced levels. She also offers courses on Swedish literature, as well as Scandinavian culture and society that are conducted in English. She has also designed and taught courses on social welfare systems and images of contemporary Scandinavia in films.


She holds a PhD in European Studies from the University of Hong Kong with a research thesis on social trust and institutional development in Sweden. Before joining HKU, she received a M.A. degree from University of Gothenburg. Her research interests include second language acquisition, Swedish as a foreign language, representations of Nordic social systems in literature and film, Nordic civil society, collective actions and welfare regimes.


During her time at HKU, she has developed the Swedish Programme from certificate at introductory level to a full-scale minor curriculum that incorporated cultural elements and digital resources in language learning. She also collaborates closely with governmental institutions and organisations to promote Swedish and Scandinavian culture locally.


She is the elected representative of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the Committee on Gender Equality and Diversity.
